Microsoft’s next Surface device could be a foldable mobile tablet, if renders inspired by Redmond’s patent filing are anything to go by.

Designer David Breyer posted detailed images of 3D renders he’d made based on patent filings Microsoft made last week which tease a foldable mobile device.

While we have to take such renders with a pinch of salt, there’s no denying that Breyer’s interpretation of the patent is eye-catching, showing a device that looks a little like a sleeker Nintendo 3DS crossed with Surface Pro and Surface Book design cues.

A lovely looking hinge awash with the type of industrial design one would expect of find on a MacBook Pro acts as a fulcrum for the foldable display to be wrapped around.

When the device is closed, a part of the screen runs along its side like the seam of a book and Breyer has it displaying notifications, such an email alerts and calendar notifications, which helps the device have a form-follows-function style of design.

Breyer has the Surface device sporting a USB Type-C port, which has been missing in Surface tablets and laptops until the recent Surface Book 2.

A Surface Pen appears alongside the Surface device, suggesting that it’ll be one of the main ways to navigate the gadget.

The renders do look like a solid interpretation of the patent Microsoft has filed, but there’s no guarantee that such a device will be made by Redmond, as the patent could merely be a prospective one such as those filed by Samsung and Apple that promise features and designs that never make it out of research and development stages.

But if Microsoft were to make such a Surface device then it could offer all manner if interesting functionality, from being a device for on the move productivity to a handheld gaming console with access to Windows based games and indy titles available through Steam.

We don’t reckon we’ll hear anything more on this until 2018, but there’s a slim chance such a Surface device could crop up in CES 2018 or MWC 2018 a month or so later.

Microsoft reported its littler Xbox Wireless Adapter prior this month, enabling Windows PCs to utilize a Xbox One controller remotely. It's 66 percent littler than the more seasoned adaptation, and just resembles a general USB stick. Like its ancestor, the new connector underpins up to eight controllers in the meantime, and in addition four normal talk headsets or two stereo ones.

The new Xbox Wireless Adapter should go on special a week ago for $24.99, yet Microsoft has now deferred its discharge until January 2018. In an abnormal move, Microsoft is discharging the connector in a few nations in front of January, however deferring its dispatch in the US advertise.

Windows Central reports that it would seem that Japan will access the connector first not long from now, close by New Zealand and Australia in September. It's not clear when the connector will be accessible crosswise over Europe, or whether different nations need to hold up until the point when January like the US. Microsoft hasn't given any motivation to the deferral, yet it's conceivable that the organization has a ton of supply of the old model still in its retail locations that it needs to offer.

Head of Microsoft’s gaming division effectively confirms Xbox is becoming a new kind of PC/console hybrid

Microsoft is planning to unify its PC and Xbox One gaming platforms into one ecosystem running Universal Windows Applications (UWAs), the head of the company’s Xbox division Phil Spencer has announced. It also looks likely that the Xbox One will become more PC-like with backwards compatible hardware upgrades in the future.

During a press event in San Francisco last week, Spencer said that the Universal Windows Platform, a common development platform that allows apps to run across PC, Xbox, tablets and smartphones, would be central to the company’s gaming strategy. “That is our focus going forward,” he told reporters. “Building out a complete gaming ecosystem for Universal Windows Applications.”

This is, he explained, the culmination of the company’s vision over the past year. In January 2015, Microsoft announced that it was bringing an Xbox app to Windows 10 PCs, allowing cross-platform play and a cohesive friends list across both platforms. Then, in November, the Xbox One was updated to be compatible with Windows 10, bringing a new interface and features to the console. In late-January, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella told attendees at the dotNet conference in Madrid that UWAs would be coming to Xbox One, but did not specify in what capacity.

Now it seems Microsoft’s plan is to shift the entire development model towards universal applications that run across PC and console – indeed any machine that’s compatible with the Universal Windows Platform. This could have radical implications for the console model, which so far has always been based on the idea that the hardware has to remain largely unchanged throughout the machine’s lifespan.

“PC gaming is as important as its ever been in the company,” he said. “Windows is a critical franchise. Over 40% of the people running Windows 10 are playing games. We want to work hand in hand with our partners to make sure we have the best platform we can have.”

Spencer reiterated the company’s commitment to abandoning console sales figures, in favour of monthly active user (MUA) data, like smartphone and online multiplayer game publishers. “This is the critical factor for our teams to gauge our success, because that’s what our partners want to know,” he said. “They want the largest collection of active gamers who are buying and playing games – that is the health metric of any service you talk about – what’s your MAU? It’s not how many consoles you sell. If I sold a console two years ago and now it’s in a closet gathering dust, that’s not good for the gamer, it’s not for the developer and it’s not good for Microsoft.”

When Microsoft first used MAUs to talk about Xbox One, the decision was criticised as an attempt to obfuscate the fact that PlayStation 4 has shifted more units. Unsurprisingly, Spencer disagrees.

“We didn’t choose this metric to hide something,” he said. “In fact, we’re more exposed because it shows how many people are actually using our platform and service every month and reporting that publicly. We’ve done it for the development community who want to know how many people they can get to by building these games. This is the success metric that all of you should be looking at.”

The big question now is how onboard the development community is with the UWA concept. In theory, these apps should run seamlessly on top of PC and Xbox One architectures, with abstractions to exploit the graphics processors, system memory and other hardware features, as well as compatibility with Microsoft’s DirectX application programming interface (API) for enhanced graphics performance. But will the reality match the promise?

To press home the advantages, Microsoft has employed in-house team Turn 10 Studios to convert its Forza Motorsports engine to the UWP format. “The Forza Tech engine is now DirectX 12 and UWP so Apex is just the start of that,” said Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt. “It was something we had to do for technology reasons, but it was also something we wanted to do to make the platforms better. We wanted to make UWP and DX 10 better for everybody.”

Outside of Microsoft, it will be interesting to see how studios react. “In principle UWA sounds like a good idea,” says Byron Atkinson-Jones, a veteran games programmer, now running his own indie studio, Xiotex, and working on sci-fi puzzler, Caretaker. “It offers a more unified platform or environment rather than a fragmented operating systems running on an even more fragmented hardware base. However, this is all reliant on just how hard it is to develop for and how much of a closed shop it will become.
“The best thing about PC is that anyone can make a game for it and UWA sounds like it’s going to become a curated system that will probably require some developer registration to get on.”

Given that Microsoft is promoting UWP as a catch-all platform for Windows 10 that encompasses Xbox one, what does this mean in terms of support for the console’s hardware specifications? “As it stands currently, if you are making an Xbox one game you can be sure on what kind of hardware it’s running,” says Atkinson-Jones. “If developers are then forced down a UWA route, is it going to be the case that this certainty is gone and we get back to the situation on PC where you have to start specifying a minimum spec – which kind of renders a unified platform redundant?”

Microsoft already lists Universal Windows Applications on its guide for Windows 10 developers. The site mentions that the platform boasts a common API offering “tools and options to tailor your game to each device experience.” The company is also already offering cross-platform game purchase promotions: for example, pre-order purchasers of forthcoming action adventure Quantum Break on Xbox One, will also get a free copy for PC.

But what’s likely to be most controversial is the indication that the Xbox One will follow the smartphone model of regular iteration, with updated hardware versions going on sale throughout its lifetime. In the past, console manufacturers have often tweaked the hardware within a generation, but usually only to make certain components more efficient. Xbox One would become a new kind of hybrid device, effectively a living room PC in the same space that Valve’s Steam Machine is currently trying to occupy. The question becomes: is that what console owners actually want?

“Everything we do on any device is being driven by the Xbox team, and that team is 100% committed to success on every platform gamers want to play on,” said Spencer. “The gamer is at the centre of every decision we make.”

But he will have to convince not just gamers, but the development community. “Microsoft has tried this before with Games for Windows and that was a disaster,” says Atkinson-Jones. “There will be many game developers who had to go through that monstrosity shaking their heads in disbelief that history may just be about to repeat itself.”

Speaking to Twit's Windows Weekly show, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Chris Capossela has admitted that the company's latest Windows Phones are not enough to reverse the ailing platform's fortunes. Describing the flagship Lumia 950 as simply "solid," he told host Leo Laporte and Microsoft journalists Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott that the company has a lot more work to do before it can persuade people to "move from an iPhone to one of [Microsoft's] phones."

Capossela drew comparison to the company's successful Surface program, which caught the public's imagination despite "a bunch of early misfires." He believes Microsoft needs "some sort of spiritual equivalent on the phone side that doesn't just feel like a phone for people that love Windows." Some are taking this to mean that Microsoft exam dumps is working on a "breakthrough Surface phone." In reality, given the context of a year-in-review podcast, it's more likely Capossela is really just noting the sort of thing that Microsoft needs to do -- create a unique device that appeals to a broad number of people. "We need time to actually build that," he added.

The CMO also spoke about the importance of attracting the younger generation to the platform. "You need Snapchat, let's face it," retorted host Leo Laporte, "That's all you really need if you want a 15-year-old." The social app is not available on Windows Phone.

"You need Snapchat, you need Instagram ... you need Uber, gotta have it. There's 10-15 apps that you just have to have on the phone," Capossela concurred. It's clear Microsoft believes it has to get the hardware and OS right before customers -- and developers -- will flock to Windows Phone.

Microsoft has just signed a new deal with longtime rival of Red Hat to support the company's version of Linux service in Microsoft Azure cloud.

Customers can run Linux on Azure, but the new partnership to support the implementation of the "hybrid cloud" where applications can exist in both private data centers and public cloud services will expand. More significantly, Microsoft and computer support Red Hat will work together for the same services to support Red Hat customers using Azure. Vice president of cloud and enterprise Microsoft Scott Guthrie said in a webcast today that this is the first time he knows that the Microsoft support team "co-located" with another company.

The agreement is the latest example of Microsoft playing nice with an old rival. "When we started [Red Hat Enterprise Linux] I never would have thought we would do this," Red Hat's president of products and technologies Paul Cormier said during transmission.

Recently, in 2007, Microsoft was threatening to sue Linux users for patent violation, but then reverse. But the world of computing has changed since then, and Microsoft had to change with it. Linux and open source software has grown from a fringe movement in the 1980s and '90s to be merely controversial in the 2000s to be so common today.

The business reasons for the association are very simple, Cormier said. Red Hat customers, particularly large companies, tend to be a combination of different technologies, including Linux and Microsoft, and they want these technologies to communicate with each other seamlessly. Red Hat and Microsoft first linked arms in 2009 to ensure compatibility between their technologies of virtual machines, an agreement that followed a controversial collaboration between Microsoft and Novell in 2006 that SUSE Linux users protected from lawsuits by Microsoft.

Microsoft reports with the open source community have gradually thawed since. The company began supporting Linux on Azure in 2012, and now 25 percent of all cases Azure runs Linux. Last September, the company said it has also been using a customized version of Linux among racks to help manage Azure. But the biggest breakthrough Microsoft was probably launch its .NET programming framework for the community, the world closed the opening of open source Microsoft.

Communicate this message to the masses was easily the most successful Microsoft MSFT -0.21% 's in the last year and the result has seen more than 110 million installations in just 11 weeks. Of course, the fine print tells a different story, but Microsoft has made a big change for the better.

Speaking to the official blog of Windows, vice president of Windows and devices Gabe Aul Group revealed a future accumulation of Windows 10 will allow users to register with their existing platform of Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 key:

"If you install this version of Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and is not automatically activated, you can enter the product key for Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the earlier version of Windows on the same device activation Windows 10, go to Settings> Update and Security> Enable and select Change Product Key ", he said.

In addition, Paul said those who want to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 to boot from the media (for example, USB drives or optical disc) would be able to use these Windows 7 and Windows 8 buttons during installation.

In short: it's huge.

Why? Because Windows 10 can now act as the last 20 versions of Windows. Previously, those seeking new installation of Windows 10 could only get the free passage literally update Windows 7 or Windows 8 and Windows 10 (which recorded the hardware with Microsoft) and then reformat everything and perform a clean installation of Windows 10. Yes, it was a ridiculous one, which saw Microsoft forum flooded with abuse from angry users situation. Something that also alludes Aul at this time: "We have received many comments Insiders in what is easier to turn on Windows 10 on devices that use the offer of a free upgrade to Windows 7 through Windows Genuine product key existing Windows 8 or Windows 8.1."

But despite this very positive development, a number of pertinent questions remain:

• You want Windows 10 is activated by a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8 / 8.1key that has already been used on a different machine?
• Would the previous course of action that Windows 8.7 / 8.1 invalid on that machine?
• Can a Windows Key 8.7 / 8.1 being dismantled Windows 10 computers in the future to update a different PC - Windows keys as they worked before?
• do the changes have no effect on the period after July 29, 2016, when 10 will offer free update for Windows is expected to end?
• Needless to say, I came to Microsoft for the answers to these questions and will update when / if I get no response. The company has been notoriously secretive about the inner workings of Windows 10 up to this point, so I hope that will change to reflect the update more open policy.
• On the other looking at recent examples of Microsoft's behavior still leaves much to be desired
• Windows 10 Qualify units Hits Full Throttle
• Of course, I welcome a wider acceptance of the keys is, it is also a symptom of accelerated approach Microsoft to push so many people to Windows 10 as quickly as possible.
• In fact, in achieving this goal of Microsoft is, in my opinion, than the regular line. For example, last month admitted to downloading Windows 10 on all Windows 7 and Windows 8 computer even if the user has explicitly said that they did not want to update. Microsoft's answer to this:
• "For people who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, upgradeable devices help you prepare for Windows 10 by downloading the files you will need if you decide to upgrade."
• Pull the other one!

On top of this last week reprinted Microsoft quietly patches for Windows 7 and Windows 8, the analysis of hardware are sent to determine the potential of a computer to upgrade to Windows 10.

It combines this with the re-release of a patch yet once you start pop-up ads on the desktop Windows 7 and Windows 8 computer urging users to upgrade to Windows 10. These tactics are still a step too far, but if Microsoft can keep the solution of the most satisfactory of Windows 10 then it can be win the trust of all in a more honorable.

Today we're getting our first look at the first smartphone Lumia Windows 10 Microsoft Microsoft's first real attempt to build on the proud tradition although a little 'under Windows Phone Nokia reached.
As with most companies these days, Microsoft is serving two different versions of its new flagship phone. Big and small. The XL 950 and 950. The 950 starts at $ 550, XL 950 begins at $ 650.

Here’s the rundown on the regular 950:-

Display: 5.2-inch WQHD OLED (564 PPI)
Processor: Snapdragon 808, hexacore, 64-bit
Storage: 32GB internal, microSD card slot
Memory: 3GB of RAM
Cameras: 20MP PureView on the rear, with optical image stabilization; 5MP wide angle (front)
Battery: 3000mAh (removable)
Extras: USB Type-C

And, of course, the 950XL has specific XXL:-

Display: 5.7-inch WQHD OLED (518 PPI)
Processor: Snapdragon 810, octacore, 64-bit
Storage: 32GB internal, microSD card slot
Memory: 3GB of RAM
Cameras: 20MP PureView on the rear, with optical image stabilization; 5MP wide angle (front)
Battery: 3340mAh (removable)
Extras: USB Type-C

What's the takeaway here? Okay so like her, are the flagship phones are at par with the most powerful phones are going to see on the main Samsung Mobile, and the Google Nexus line. The screens are the same and so are the chipset. Like other leaders, Microsoft has adopted the USB Type-C.

In Nokia phones, cameras PureView were a real differentiation. The technology was so good that he made mobile platform Windows Phone much less competitive. Microsoft is holding its approach here with a dedicated camera button.

So, if it was not obvious, the important question is whether Windows 10 works smartphone platform. Microsoft was the first technology giant to truly embrace mobile operating systems and the convergence desktop.

During demonstrations today, Microsoft took pains to emphasize the strengths of its ecosystem, and the ability to work on all platforms. The coolest part was the demo of Universal Office applications running on mobile Lumia. You want to use the phone to power a bunch of PowerPoint files or Word on a big screen? No?!?! Have you ever wanted something more in life? Well, you can!

In addition, the company said on several occasions to the deep integration of services such as Windows 10 with the mail client Outlook and onedrive. When you take a picture with excellent gazillion doubt PureView camera, you can download on-line automatically.

This is all very impressive, but it is important to note that after Whizzbang keynote, the truth is that, except for universal applications, much of this has been possible for some time. Phones have been powerful for a long period of time! You can use them to power screens. This is not new. But Microsoft implementation of all cable-clumsy certainly looks exciting.

Microsoft is set to interact with the smartphone market, again through two new Lumia devices with Windows operating system. The next phone should be totemic devices and Redmond have been priced accordingly. Time to pursue low-end market is over. With cloud services trying to be the new lifeblood of the company, the Lumia devices have a greater role to play in the brand and the trust that simply moving boxes.

A recent report on TechRadar suggests that Microsoft is deducted from your new Lumia phone at the same level as the iPhone and the iPhone 6S 6S more. The 5.2-inch Lumia 950 seems to be screened 659 euro, while the larger Lumia 950 XL with a screen 5.7-inch will be priced at 749 Euros.

Previous Microsoft Lumia phone family has seen the Lumia 830 take the star point of fact with a pitch that involved the specific price of mid-range hardware and high level of competition, but not necessarily. While the phone is more than competent (and if I had to choose a Windows Phone to use as my daily driver would be the Lumia 830), who spoke of ambition, state or technical skill.

There are also a contraction of the average portfolio of smartphones that is proving almost impossible for manufacturers to crack. The only real options are to go down and they hope to build revenue through the volume, or to go higher sales and sacrifice for a greater margin and revenue growth. While Nokia may have been masters of the volume of low-priced sales, knowledge and skills you never made the jump when the business section of devices and services are sold in Redmond.

So Microsoft applauds the decision to focus on high-end market and show what a smartphone peaked with Windows 10 can do. I also congratulate Microsoft to go head to head with Apple's iPhone in terms of price, even if a part of me wonders if the coincidence phones price implies that Microsoft believes that the iPhone price as the maximum price of a smartphone consumer.

In a sense, the pressure is off because Windows smart team is not all about sales. The main goal of Microsoft in the mobile space is to get people to use their cloud-based services, as onedrive, Office Groove music and 365. These are no longer limited to Microsoft products, but are readily available in iOS and Android as well as Windows desktop with Office 2016 is now available for OSX, as part of Microsoft Office 365 subscription is everywhere to be.

The new Lumia devices fall into the same category as the device surface. They are not necessarily to win market shares or the capture of a large number of users. They deal with the state, there are about trust, and are about the vision.

The Lumia Microsoft to continue to give the state to be involved in the smartphone market, as producers, and not just a software vendor. This approach allows the company to retain knowledge and for Microsoft to continue to be part of the conversation. Trust to present a unique vision of a world of smart phones give the workforce a totem physically to the ambitions of Microsoft. It provides a view of a Microsoft operating within the cloud and in combination with other platforms. And the new open nature we notice that the CEO of Satya Nadella hopes to promote in society.

The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL can not get to number one on the charts, but the devices are important for Microsoft to launch and support. They are not designed to stack 'em high and sell' em low-cost devices. These are times of luxury, which should demonstrate the capabilities of Microsoft as the hardware capabilities much. These devices are of the highest quality that are the best of breed.

Microsoft says Office 2016 represents a shift from 'me productivity' to 'team productivity'".

Microsoft Office 2016 has come to the sale on Wednesday (New Zealand time), so the real-time collaboration, better integration of Skype and quick access to many options to suite which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Updates are big jumps. But Microsoft, which saw long-time customers are turning to Google, Apple and others for word processing, spreadsheets and other applications of the competition, says Office 2016 will improve on the previous versions.

There are new icons or menus to fashion, said Shawn Villaron, group manager for PowerPoint. The best way to evaluate the latest version is "looking at new scenarios that are enabling," he said in an interview. "We believe that the version of Office 2016 is a big change of" productivity "for" team productivity.'"
New Features Include:

Outlook tries to determine how to handle incoming mail and automatically organized for you.
A new search engine called Tell me PowerPoint, Word and Excel allows you to find a function to say "columns" and pull up the appropriate menu immediately.
  • When not connected to the Internet, some functions will automatically turn off while the document remains accessible.
  • Groups in Outlook for a corporate team or just a group of friends planning a trip to manage messages and documents.
  • Word allows two people work on a document and see their changes in real time.
  • Skype video calls can sit comfortably at the top of a document while editing.
Since the initial features will not work in all programs at launch, the release can be seen as planting a flag, Villaron, showing the direction Microsoft is heading said. "Clearly we have reached to Google" on the collaboration front, said Office .that is not necessarily as simple as competing offers. With more software and more features than most of them, the new Office could still take some effort.

A user must learn to save files onedrive or Sharepoint, and switch between applications and browser traditional desktop programs. New tools such as Sway, a way to make PowerPoint presentations and instant Planner, an application for managing projects, could be hits, but only if they are tainted.

Microsoft is reaching that goes on Satya Nadella took over as chief executive early last year. He Office programs support multiple devices from Apple and Android, and developers has prompted the company to take gambles. Most greater importance for the future of Microsoft, it is urging people to pay more for the office, and pay more regularly.

With Office 365, a service that starts at $ 16 per month and includes online versions of applications, users get monthly updates: new types of Excel charts, new instruments of co-working, more tie-in with the application server Virtual Cortana and other enhancements based on user feedback.Microsoft convinced 15 million consumers and four out of five Fortune 500 companies for the subscription. It is a source "exciting" sales growth in the long term, Nadella told analysts in July.

Amy Hood, chief financial officer of Microsoft, Office 365 described as "critical", because a deeper relationship with customers consistency is easier to sell add-ons or additional services.Office 2016 requires Windows 7 or later, and is free to new and existing Office 365 subscribers. Office also includes OneNote note-taking program.

The company is testing a program where enterprises send encrypted drives for direct upload to OneDrive accounts. Consumers wouldn't mind this service, either.

One of the challenges of change to a new provider of cloud storage is a very practical: Load the value from data always involves a life. Microsoft Office 365 Import Service allows companies to take a shortcut: units encrypted mail directly to Microsoft to charge directly onedrive.

At this point, the program is a person limited: Companies can send a unit of a data center to be loaded into Microsoft SharePoint, or send a specific set of files to Microsoft Outlook PST to plant an Office 365 account. During this preview of the program, the service is free.

As expected, however, companies are not the only ones who need to move large amounts of data.
Consumers can be stuck in a cloud service, for the simple reason that once the data is loaded, go to another service provides for the discharge of material locally, and then upload the new service. Even if someone was willing to take the time, major Internet service providers like Comcast often implement the so-called red lines' that the protections of data "on the number of data users can upload and download each month that could frustrate any plans to transfer Large data.

Many ISPs have temporarily suspended tapas, as competition from streaming services like Netflix, online marketplaces such as upgrades of steam in perpetual Windows 10 become the new reality. But Comcast wants to restore data caps, and is putting to the test fees to get around them are a bit 'the same thing.

Sending a unit called "seeding" a Microsoft or Google would certainly lower the barrier to switching from one provider to another, especially if the supplier itself costs ate. Note that Microsoft requires that encrypt the drive, so if you lose during the transport of data is theoretically safe.

Why this is important:

The concept of backup "sowing" is not new. CrashPlan from Code42 service used to offer the ability to send an encrypted for them to upload data into the cloud. (We could not confirm whether this option is available, however.) Quick Backup, a service of Australia, also offers the opportunity to plant. Microsoft said it will follow suit with an option to plant consumers onedrive. Has neither Google, for Google Drive. But for cloud services that want to grow their business, Planting Unit can be a worthwhile option offer.

Microsoft is the latest tech firm to be accused of gender discrimination.

The company has been hit with a class action lawsuit in federal court in the state of Washington on Wednesday. A former employee, Katie Moussouris, accuses the company unfairly discriminated against her and other female employees because of their sex. Moussouris was hired as director of Microsoft security program in 2007. The lawsuit alleges that he was passed over for more than a promotion, while their male colleagues who were less qualified, have been promoted.

The company based on sexist policies violate Title VII and the Washington Law Against Discrimination, according to demand. The suit cites especially unfair to women "stack ranking". Microsoft uses this numerical classification system until 2014 to evaluate, compensate and promote employees. According to the lawsuit, the techniques normally workers received lower scores than their male peers.

"It is an artificial system that requires winners and losers," said Kelly Dermody, lawyer Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, one of the two companies representing Moussouris. "There is no need to do so on the basis of the results." Moreover, internal complaints made by a superior Moussouris sexually harass colleagues. Although Microsoft has found the charges have merit, he simply moved. Moussouris argues that retaliated against her by giving her a low bonus and reduce their responsibilities.
Moussouris is a visiting professor at the MIT Sloan School of Business and New America Foundation Fellow. He left Microsoft (MSFT, tech30) in May 2014, after working for the company for seven years. Now is director of policy for HackerOne, a security startup. Microsoft workforce is 76% male. The lack of diversity is even more pronounced at the executive level, which is 88% male.

In a statement, Microsoft said it was "committed to a diverse workforce." "We have already reviewed the applicant's arguments on their expertise and not find anything to substantiate these claims, and we will review carefully this new complaint."

Microsoft is not the first technology company to its internal policies in question. A Twitter (tWTR, tech30) lawsuit filed earlier this year, also claims that the company has promotional practices that prevent women from moving up the corporate ladder.

Peggy Johnson, executive vice president of business development at Microsoft, appeared on "Bloomberg West" on Tuesday, and he shared his thoughts on Microsoft and its renewed openness to alliances.

One comment in particular stood out was the answer to why he joined Microsoft last year, after spending 24 years at Qualcomm, when it became the first major hire NADELLA since being appointed CEO.

"I had seen his progression and was curious as to his view. It looks so different," Johnson, Nadella said. "And out of nowhere, when I received a call to look at the role of business development manager, and got to know in person Satya. It 'an agent of this change and whatever you bought in, I took it and I moved to Seattle."

In fact, recruitment is in the news because NADELLA created his first position in Microsoft. And she's been nothing but impressive for its first 12 months of collaborative efforts Microsoft: her and struck agreements with Uber, Yahoo, Dropbox, and AOL.

"Satya recognizes the importance of working with partners, so I think we will continue to see reports perhaps surprising in the coming year," he said.It is no secret that Microsoft Satya Nadella has become a more beautiful and kinder after He was appointed CEO at the beginning of last year.

That image will be modified on full display Wednesday when an address is given in Dreamforce, the annual conference organized by Salesforce massive - the company that used to have one of the most controversial relationship with Microsoft in the pre-Nadella.

"Basically, we are here because we are good partners," added Johnson. "Of course it's areas of expertise, but we have many more areas of synergy, and that's what we are choosing to focus on our partnership with Salesforce."

Since early last year, Microsoft and Salesforce have actively sought partnership agreements, ranging from Salesforce for Outlook, much stronger integrations with SharePoint and onedrive, and a partnership with Power BI solution for analysis Data from Microsoft.

Nadella opening speech will begin at 17:00 am PST. Johnson said Nadella will focus on three areas: "the processes and reinvent business productivity, creating more personal computing experience, and the construction of intelligent cloud".

Microsoft 4Afrika program is to develop business endeavor, vocational training, the leadership, the relations conditioned. It is billed as a program to strengthen the capacity of business and government of Africa A technology use. In the best case, but also it increases Microsoft.

Mariappan Anand spends his days in the data analysis tools Microsoft built largely designed for people like him. That is, employees accustomed to high-resolution monitors, internet lightning and amenities of a modern office park.In January, the 31-year-old software developer spent three weeks doing everything possible to help a different constituency: startups trying to get off the ground in Kampala, Uganda.

There, things like optimizing the distribution of an application for the iPhone is not exactly the same importance to ensure that the software can run smoothly if the Internet service cut. "Here, you have many resources. Talent Engineering, easy Internet" Mariappan said. "In developed countries, it does not take into account some of these factors."

The Mariappan trip was part of two years, the initiative Microsoft 4Afrika $ 75 million. The program MySkills4Afrika transported about 400 employees at Microsoft in two or three weeks time to customers in the countries of Africa to share their special skills, the development of software for marketing.

Business development effort, the training of the workforce leadership, public relations push, 4Afrika is classified as a program to strengthen the ability of companies and governments of the continent to use the technology. At best, it also improves the image of Microsoft and client list of the company expands.

"It is not philanthropy, it is not a charity," Fernando de Sousa, Microsoft's director of human resources for the Middle East and Africa and founder of the program director said. "We are investing in the continent, in order to allow economic development." Microsoft's investment in Africa began, as many US companies in South Africa, the largest and more of the continent's most industrialized economy. The company was one of the first companies in the United States to return to South Africa after Congress repealed the trade sanctions amid signs of a thaw in the racist abuse of forced apartheid.
De Sousa joined Microsoft in South Africa in 1992 and was in the team that in 2005, played a non-commercial strategy for the Americas, focusing on how technology can help achieve the development goals of the United Nations continent. In 2013, Microsoft announced an initiative 4Afrika three years, the commission of what De Sousa said it is the largest investment in development around the world outside China.

"In the background was the idea that we need to think of Africa in a different way," said de Sousa, born in Mozambique. The program has not been without its failure. The centerpiece of his early days, a force for the adoption of a low-cost, Windows-powered smartphones, "he did well," Winnie Karanu, a program manager with Microsoft in Kenya. This effort coincided with the global struggles for Microsoft to grow its small market share in smartphones amid stiff competition from Google and Apple.

More success, Karanu says, are training programs, internships for young people, a pilot to use the TV white space to expand the reach of the Internet, and MySkills4Afrika program.

Mariappan work in Uganda focuses on sharing his vision of BI applications, Microsoft relatively new tool for data analysis. Time passed with companies trying to make sense of sales data regarding agricultural products and helped build a startup mobile payment tools.
"My goal was to teach," he said. "But I learned a lot."

Eileen Chou, team leader IT support detailed Microsoft in Redmond, spent three weeks in Kenya in October, together with some other employees of Microsoft to train the IT department of the methods of the Kenya Red Cross and workflow how to make use of a grant of Microsoft software.

"We all kind of come to a realization that the fundamental issues are very similar," he said. "You always feel like you never have enough people to do everything, always wear multiple hats" He added: "all do it again in a heartbeat"

I have worked in IT for about 30 years and have seen a lot of changes. Over the years, I was interviewed and was interviewed for the various IT jobs, and education and certification issues always come.

What skills are in demand?

Right now I'm working part-time in education and are wondering what you need to know to get a job in IT? Should be industry certifications (Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, CompTIA), an IT certification program, a degree or a combination? The challenge for educators is to know what skills to teach and make sure those are the same skills that employers are demanding in their new hires. Being in the field of public education, we can offer only a limited number of classes, and I think that would be amazed the skills of high school students have, or rather, without graduating. Imagine trying to teach subnets or binary math for students who have to use their calculator to perform simple addition and subtraction problems.

When I started my career in IT, I have learned with practice. The only classes that are taught in schools are planned, and classes in the networks are only in the best university programs in electrical engineering. Times have changed. YouTube is full of thousands of videos on PCs, servers and networks.

This semester I teach CompTIA A + course. It has been 10 years since I actually played around with the hardware. But to my surprise, when I checked the contents of the textbook of A +, I felt like I knew everything: ISA, EISA, Micro Channel, IDE, parallel ports, Thicknet, Thinnet. This was all stuff that I used to 10 to 20 years, and I wondered why this material should be included in an A + textbook today.

Some of these technologies are 30 years of age. And some of these things I've ever seen. This really questioned what we should teach students today. We should teach including PCI, PCI-X and AGP? Not these technologies are rapidly disappearing in history? As I leafed through the book page 1000, it was more like a history of hardware of a textbook on the new hardware for IT professionals.

I also wonder to what extent an IT professional needs to know the hardware these days. In the past, I added RAM, CPU changed, and installed larger hard drives, but it's something we're still doing today? I think it's been 15 years since I installed a faster CPU. When you look at the new equipment as Microsoft Surface, Apple iPad and ultrathin notebooks, these items are not all sealed units. I'm having a hard time believing that someone is upgrading the RAM or install a faster CPU these days.

I think we should fill the RAM in the brains of our students with current and relevant information. After all, are not most of the companies by improving hardware every three to five years? I think hardware that has more than five years simply is not worth the upgrade. Or am I out of place?

Value in certification?

I also wonder about the value of certifications. I am aware of Microsoft MCSA, MCSE, CompTIA A +, Net +, and Security +, Cisco CCNA, and certification exam VMware VCP, but employers do not see any value in them? How do I search industry certifications, I am learning that there is a whole new set of certifications that are issues much easier and cheaper than the what I call the test "real" or existing. The IT industry has created many certifications, I wonder if there is any value in certification. How is a student or employer to know which are valuable and which are not. I meet many hungry students dead who have spent $ 500- $ 800 to take these certification exams of young people that do not make sense for employers.

These certifications Junior does not lead to more advanced or prestige of MCSA or MCSE.
I am now questioning the value of IT training and certification industry. Are They Worth It? What should we teach our students, the next generation of IT workers and potential employees? In the last ten years I taught the basics: the basics of networking, (and I mean networking with Cisco, but as computer networks transmit data), the fundamental / AD administration of Windows Server to the current version of Windows Server, the Server virtualization and cloud. I make sure that my students have a strong dose of practical skills in communication and problem solving, documentation, creation and skills help desk ticketing. Many of these skills are difficult to prove.

I also teach safety. In reviewing textbooks security, I just can not believe how existing books obsolete. In A + textbook, talk about security flaws and attacks against Windows NT and Windows 95. Who cares? It is assumed that these classes to teach job skills current, with no history of malware. I feel guilty teach my students "I Love You" virus or "Code Red" from a textbook $ 175 when there is nothing on the types of attacks that have occurred in the past five years.

Hands-on learning:

Believing he was doing a disservice to my students and future employers, I have my students have started competing computer online competitions. Not only are my students get real-world, hands-on experience, but they are learning about the latest cyber attacks and how to detect threats instead occurred 10 or 20 years ago. I'm finding my students like this teaching method. Not only are they learning about the actual methods used by the attackers, also close to the security in the same way they would in a real job.

If you are hiring a manager who would like to hear what skills and certifications that would like to see candidates for IT positions that may be hiring for? If you are a recent rent, what skills and certifications they had to be hired?

A day after Netflix announced significant changes to its policy of parental, permission technological giant Microsoft has unveiled updates for employees who will be mothers or fathers.

In a statement released Wednesday says that Microsoft is extending the license to the parents of 12 weeks with full pay. Birth mothers can also earn eight weeks of maternity disability leave "with full pay.The company says it will also allow biological mothers to use short-term disability leave during the two weeks before her due date. The changes will into force on 1 November.

"While we ask our employees to bring their" A "game to work every day to achieve our mission, we believe it is our responsibility to create an environment where people can do their best work," said Kathleen Hogan, executive vice president HR Microsoft, in a statement. "A key component of this is supporting our employees with major benefits for them."

Microsoft also said the new parents may choose to do a full 12-week period off or divided into two stretches. On Tuesday, Netflix announced it was stepping up its policy of parental leave by offering paid leave up to a year for the birth of a child or adoption. Employees were allowed to come back and leave again, if necessary, and continue to earn their regular wage for all. Netflix already offered one "unlimited" instead of politics.

The policies are "way above and beyond" what they offer most US companies, says Emily Martin, vice president and general counsel with the National Law Center for Women. "More and more companies are recognizing that the provision of a good family leave is not only good for employees, but good for business," says Martin.

This is a significant shift in thinking in the United States, which ranks last among the 38 countries of parental leave supported by the government, according to a 2013 report by the Pew Research Center. "The work done by academics, politicians and organizations to change expectations on parental leave in the United States was built in the last ten years," says Katherine Phillips, vice dean of the Columbia Business School.

However, Phillips says companies must ensure that employees are comfortable time off without worrying about the possible impact on his career. "It's not just to make time available," said, "We have to change the values, expectations and stigma surrounding the use of this free time to the demands of parenthood."

Microsoft has modified Windows 10 so that users must explicitly define a default application for applications such as browsers email, calendar, or web. The change means that the installation installers for Firefox and Chrome can no longer set as the default browser during installation. Mozilla is not happy with the change, and the company uses Microsoft to reverse what he calls an "aggressive move to replace the user's choice on Windows 10."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, CEO of Mozilla Chris Beard describes the company's concerns. "We must now more than twice the number of clicks, scrolling content and some technical sophistication for people to reaffirm the choices they had made in earlier versions of Windows," says Beard. " It is confusing, difficult to navigate and easy to get lost. "Mozilla has created a video to show the amount of clicks needed to set Firefox as your default browser.

If an application like Firefox or Chrome wants to define default it can still generate a pop-up when you first launch, but it is now launching a Windows user 10 to a new settings page then select the application actual default. Mozilla's argument that it is more complicated just as there are several steps to actually change your default browser and it is likely to generate confusion for some consumers.

It is not clear why Microsoft changed this behavior, but the company has justified as a way to reduce "part of the unwanted noise that can bring multiple prompts" during testing of Windows 10. The reality is likely to ensure more safety related applications can not divert the default settings, and also a slightly roundabout way to ensure Microsoft board remains the default browser. Anyway, it is a hostile user switching from Microsoft.

Mozilla says it has reached out to Microsoft to discuss its concerns, but "it has not led to significant progress" so Barbara was forced to pen an open letter. Mozilla has expressed similar concerns about Microsoft changes the browser of Windows RT back in 2012. "We urge you to reconsider your business tactic here and still respect the right of people to choose and control their online experience," says Beard. "Please give your users the choice and control they deserve in Windows 10."

Microsoft responded to the following statement :. "We designed Windows 10 to provide a simple upgrade experience for users and a consistent experience after upgrade During the upgrade, consumers have the choice of putting in default, including web browsing Following the upgrade ,. they can easily choose the default browser of their choice As with all aspects of the product, we designed Windows 10 as a service ;. if we learn from the experience of the user that there are ways to make improvements, we will. No matter what the new mission Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is to allow people vaguely "to get more," he focused on one thing: to have cloud computing.

Not only Microsoft compete head to head with the market leader Amazon to encourage programmers and companies manage their applications on the cloud service Microsoft, also sets all kinds of applications on their own cloud the sale of the same. This exceeds Office 365 (its cloud version of Office), and Microsoft Dynamics (his sales application of cloud computing, which competes with Salesforce).

One of these cloud services is called Enterprise Mobility Suite, and Wednesday, speaking at the Worldwide Partner Conference in society in Orlando, Florida, COO Kevin Turner said thousands of resellers of the company think that product will become a billion dollar business in the future, the CRN reports. He wants now sell and adding their own applications, services above it.

Enterprise Mobility Suite is a combination of three of Microsoft's cloud services:
  • Azure Active Directory Premium, which manages passwords for employees for Windows and for thousands of other cloud apps, and can help a company detect if its being attacked
  • Microsoft Intune, which manages and protects the mobile devices themselves, from Windows PCs and laptops to Android/iOS/Windows smartphones
  • Azure Rights Management, which can password protect the data itself so sensitive documents can't be seen by unauthorized people.
Each of these can be sold separately for $ 6 / month per employee, but Microsoft gathers them together for $ 7.60 / month per employee. Note that companies.

This seems to be a winning combination so far. In April, when Microsoft announced earnings, Nadella said analysts Enterprise Mobility Suite is growing rapidly and has had at that time more than 13,000 corporate clients.

He used as an example of one of the "premium" services where Microsoft can zoom profitable competitive edge in the cloud, without being involved in the "race to zero" price war going on in other areas of cloud computing, Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

That said, there is plenty of competition in all areas of software and mobile management already, including companies such as SAP, IBM and VMware, and market specialists with an emphasis phone or in a more specific cloud as Good Technology, MobileIron and Okta.
